Hargeisa, 26 January 2026 — The Republic of Somaliland has taken a decisive step in its security strategy with the finalization of a National Policy on Preventing Extremism. The policy framework was the focus of a high-level coordination meeting chaired by the Minister of Justice, Hon. Yoonis Ahmed Yoonis, earlier today.
The session convened Somaliland’s senior security leadership, including the Commander of the Police Force, the Custodial Corps Commander, and the Deputy Director of the National Intelligence Agency. They were joined by international partners from the United Kingdom Government and the Global Initiative on Security and Terrorism (GIST), underscoring the collaborative nature of the initiative.
The discussions aimed at solidifying inter-agency cooperation within Somaliland’s security and justice institutions and aligning efforts with international partners. The goal is to establish a unified, strategic approach to counter the ideologies that fuel violent extremism.
“This meeting marks a pivotal advancement in our national security architecture,” officials stated. “The policy is not merely a reactive measure, but a proactive, whole-of-society framework designed to prevent radicalization at its roots, strengthen community resilience, and ensure the long-term safety and stability of the Republic of Somaliland.”
Following final technical consultations and refinements, the formal launch of the National Policy on Preventing Extremism is scheduled for the coming weeks.
