In a landmark declaration that reverberates far beyond the Horn of Africa, the House of Representatives of the Republic of Somaliland has formally welcomed and endorsed the State of Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland’s sovereignty and independence. Adopted unanimously on 27 December 2025, this resolution marks a pivotal moment in Somaliland’s decades-long journey toward international recognition.
Issued by the Office of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Yasin Hagi Mohamoud Hir, the resolution celebrates Israel’s courageous and principled stance as a beacon of moral clarity in global diplomacy. By extending diplomatic acknowledgment, Israel has reaffirmed its historic role—first demonstrated on 26 June 1960—as a nation willing to stand with emerging democracies and validate their rightful place in the international community.
“Israel has validated the decades of unwavering struggle, immense sacrifice, and steadfast belief in justice that have defined the Somaliland narrative since 1991,” the resolution states.
This endorsement is not merely symbolic. It is a call to action for the global community to respect the inherent right of the people of Somaliland to self-determination. The resolution urges all states and international organizations to follow Israel’s lead and recognize Somaliland’s democratic achievements, institutional stability, and commitment to peace.
Somaliland’s Parliament also used the occasion to honor the successive governments and leaders who have guided the nation from post-conflict recovery to democratic resilience. Their vision, sacrifice, and prudent governance have transformed Somaliland into a model of stability in a volatile region.
The resolution reaffirms Somaliland’s commitment to international law, the principles of the United Nations Charter, and peaceful coexistence among nations. It positions Somaliland not as a claimant, but as a contributor to global peace, justice, and democratic values.
“Our statehood is rooted in democratic ideals, human rights, respect to international law and adherence to global standards of justice and equality,” the declaration affirms.
This historic moment is more than a diplomatic milestone—it is a testament to the enduring will of the Somaliland people and a signal to the world that recognition is not a gift, but a right earned through resilience, governance, and peace.
